August 12, 2017Solar eclipse viewing can permanently damage vision

Beginning at 1:11 p.m., on Monday, August 21, 2017 a solar eclipse will be visible from the Valdosta area. Just north of Athens, Georgia, the eclipse will be total, and for those of us here in Valdosta, it will be only slightly less than spectacular. Do not observe the eclipse by looking directly at it. Sunlight, even the partial light of an eclipse, can burn and scar the macula, and cause permanent loss of vision. Use an indirect method of observation, such as those recommended by NASA. August 10, 2017Mediterranean Diet Protects Against Age-Related Macular Degeneration

A recent study from Portugal demonstrated that people who eat a Mediterranean diet (lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, some nuts, whole grains, and modest amounts of lean meat and fish) or who drink coffee have a lower risk of developing age-related macular degeneration. It is consistent with previous studies that have shown beneficial effects from antioxidants, lutein, and omega-3 oils. https://www.karger.com/Article/Abstract/371584
